Sinking Sundarbans

Supratim Bhattacharjee (38) lives and works as a photographer in India, focusing on in-depth visual storytelling. His projects are mostly long-term and deal with ecological, social and humanitarian issues.

One of his long-term projects "Sinking Sundarbans" was awarded second place in the Best-of-Best at the >ProfiFoto New Talent Award 21/22<. An image from this ecological and humanitarian project was selected as the 2021 "UNICEF Photo of the Year." The project shows how the world's largest mangrove region is threatened by rapid climate change. Supratim Bhattacharjee began the project "The Curse of Coal" in 2014, which he continues to pursue today. It is a long-term project that deals with fossil fuel extraction and its deadly effects on the environment. This ecological and humanitarian project was chosen as the "UNICEF Photo of the Year" 2020. His works were exhibited at the 2021 Climate Summit in the Netherlands. His work is regularly published in major international publications and receives worldwide recognition. His goal is to use his projects to encourage policy makers to champion the cause of humanity. In the future, Supratim Bhattacharjee plans to depict the cruel reality of human life in South Asian countries with utmost honesty while preserving the dignity of human beings. He currently lives in Kolkata, India, and is available for assignments around the world. He is represented by De Beeldunie, Netherlands.

New Talent Award

Twice a year, the New Talent Award, organized by Canon and ProfiFoto in cooperation with the Laif photo agency and Whitewall, offers photographers the chance to find support for their "pictures in the head". The concept, which has been further developed from the >Canon Profifoto Förderpreis<, opens up the competition to the numerous career changers in professional photography. Anyone who works professionally in photography or related professions, regardless of age and whether full-time or part-time, can participate. The award, which comes with an annual prize money of 3,000 euros, is presented every six months by a renowned jury to five applicants whose photographic style is convincing and whose concepts arouse curiosity for more. The jury selects the three best works from a total of ten winning entries in the two annual sections of the competition.
