Reinbeckhallen Berlin - Jetzt: Magnum Photos

Exhibitions at the Helmut Newton Foundation and the Reinbeckhallen Foundation, Berlin, in September will showcase the current transformation and working methods of the Magnum Photos photography agency, as well as iconic photographs of stars from Hollywood's golden age.

With a variety of exhibitions, the legendary photographer agency Magnum Photos is celebrating its 75th anniversary in the German capital at the beginning of September.
The Helmut Newton Foundation is presenting a special highlight with the exhibition "Magnum Photos: The Misfits" (September 3 - November 20, 2022): Arthur Miller's famous play was filmed in 1960 by star director John Huston with a stellar cast. Almost all Magnum members at the time photographed on set and captured world-famous images, which will be shown in Berlin on the occasion of the agency's anniversary.
The sensitively photographed images surrounding The Misfits production are literally "glimpses behind the scenes." For example, Marilyn Monroe is seen concentrating on her lines in a shot by Inge Morath. Or Montgomery Clift in the rear of a car, shot by Dennis Stock. Another example is the famous group shot with the actors and actresses on set, flanked by the director and writer, photographed by Elliott Erwitt. In addition, the exhibition also brings together photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Cornell Capa, Ernst Haas, and Erich Hartmann. In short, the exhibition represents a Who's Who of photography legends of that time (and today). With the presentation "Magnum Photos: The Misfits," the Helmut Newton Foundation celebrates the 75th anniversary of the photo agency. At the same time, numerous other events with members of the legendary cooperative will take place in Berlin. (Matthias Harder)
Another highlight is the exhibition "Now: Magnum Photos" at Reinbeckhallen (September 3-November 20, 2022); it is a curatorial survey of iconic Magnum images as well as a perspective look at current works by Magnum photographers. It will show how they are using new ways of working to reach an audience interested not only in Magnum Photos, but also in contemporary issues and their photographic representation.
This exhibition is the result of a recent reorientation of the photographer's agency and takes a perspective look at the present of the institution founded shortly after the Second World War. It shows how the agency and photography have changed in recent years and how this expresses different perspectives and experiences across countries and continents. "Now: Magnum Photos" will feature ongoing and current projects by 20 photographers - Khalik Allah, Olivia Arthur, Jonas Bendiksen, Myriam Boulos, Sabiha Çimen, Carolyn Drake, Gregory Halpern, Sohrab Hura, Alex Majoli, Cristina de Middel, Rafal Milach, Emin Özmen, Mark Power, Hannah Price, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Lindokuhle Sobekwa, Alec Soth, Mikhael Subotzky and Newsha Tavakolian. Each position asks viewers to consider not only how photographic genres such as photojournalism are changing, but also the role of photography today, whether through the addition of fictional and nonfictional texts or the inclusion of film, sound, architecture, and textiles. With the exhibition curated by Dr. Candice M. Hamelin, the Reinbeckhallen Foundation contributes to the fourth edition of the BERLIN PHOTO WEEK (September 2-4). The group exhibition is accompanied by a supporting program that includes lectures, film screenings and workshops.
