CIPA Forecast: Camera market 2022

The Japanese Camera & Imaging Products Association, CIPA, has published its forecast for the sales of cameras and related products for 2022. According to this forecast, a total of 7,850,000 digital cameras will be sold worldwide, up 93.9% from the previous year.

The tightening of semiconductor supply has impacted many industries, and the photo and imaging industry is no exception.
According to CIPA statistics, a total of 8,361,521 digital cameras were sold worldwide from January to December 2021, representing 94.1% of the previous year's level. System cameras (SLR and mirrorless), which now account for more than 60% of the total market, saw slight growth at 100.8%. The global interchangeable lens market had a total of 9,549,347 units in 2021, up 105.8% year-on-year. This means that 1.8 interchangeable lenses were sold for every system camera sold. Cameras with fixed lenses found a total of 3,013,250 buyers worldwide, 15.8% less than in the previous year.

This means that the negative trend of the last ten years is weakening slightly. While the camera market initially expanded strongly at the beginning of the CIPA statistics in 1999, it declined for the first time in 2009 due to the effects of the global economic recession, fell further in 2011 due to the effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the floods in Thailand, and then shrank more and more. After appearing to reverse the trend in 2017, the camera market worldwide has fallen below the respective previous year's level for the fourth year in a row since 2018.

For the current year 2022, CIPA expects 7,850,000 digital cameras to be sold, 93.9% of the previous year. Of these, around 1,090,000 will remain in the Japanese market, while 6,760,000 cameras are expected to be sold in the rest of the world. The total figure includes 5,290,000 digital cameras with interchangeable lenses and 2,560,000 with integrated lenses. In addition, 9,480,000 interchangeable lenses were sold, which is only 0.7% less than the previous year.
CIPA President Shigeki Ishizuka: "It was not easy to summarise the outlook amid the ongoing COVID-19 disaster, but interchangeable lens sales are expected to continue to outpace system camera sales by 1.8 times, stimulating the market."
